How to clean and maintain your knife to keep it looking and performing like the day you bought it.

Sharpening

Sharpening your blade is key to a reliable knife when you need it. There are many different ways to sharpen a knife but I'll share my favorite one here. (I will share ways to sharpen high carbon steel but it applies to most stainless steels as well).

A sharpening stone (wet stone) is best to sharpen your blade. I use a simple fairly sheep stone to do most maintenance in chip repair and secondary bevels. My favorite one for this is a three-sided wet stone that allows you to easily grind out ships and rolls, apply a rough edge as well as get you pretty close to a perfect edge. Some stropping can be done to get a perfect polished edge. I won't cover the technique here but if you are interested, many video's on YouTube will cover this.

If done correctly, you can get a pretty sharp blade with just a few passes of a wet stone. maintaining a sharp edge will greatly prolong your knifes life.

Oiling your knife

Keeping your blade oiled (Especially high carbon) is very crucial to keep your knife looking and performing amazingly. if your knife is not stored properly it can lead to some pesky rust that can be tricky to remove. If your knife already has some rust, there are lots of great sources out there to teach you how to remove rust from a knife

High-carbon steel is very susceptible to surface rust which could lead to some catastrophic failures in its performance and looks. I like to use mineral oil but most oils are better than nothing.

The application of this is very straightforward, just get a clean cloth or rag and apply oil to it, then simply rub your knife down in oil applying a thin layer about once a month or so depending on how humid it is where you live. (More humidity = more rust).

The right knife makes all the difference
